Anyway, my theory about having to call Josef with Ace King to stand on a 2h10d flop is that the only thing Josef will call with is a high card which is unlikely to beat my hand. Since I have no hand, the only chance I have to win is to hit a 2 or a 10. The pot odds say I should call Josef’s 20$ bet right? Wrong!
I have about a 15% chance of winning this hand by seeing the Turn for my Ace high hand and about 5% by seeing the river. This is not an extremely good chance when you think about it. Most people would say “Togel88” and “surely not” and then bet on the next hand. When you are trying to win at these short-handed games people can have all kinds of different odds and you should probably forget about trying to see the Turn or the River. Sure, if I hit a King or Ace I would make it a big hand, maybe even going all in, but the King or Ace isn’t going to change anything in the slightest.
If I had just slightly crippled my opponent and he had a weak hand I would try to look for a situation where I could steal the pot. Sure, I might lose the hand, but I would pick up quite a nice pot anyhow. Most people play enough of these short-handed games that they really can’t afford to make many mistakes. Your main goal should be to give yourself a fighting chance to win each hand. You will then have to wish your opponent good luck in the next hand or hope that they have a really, really bad hand.
There are many other options that you can use in these situations other than simply being bully and going all-in. You should be patient and play fewer hands in larger pots. Doing this will give you more opportunities to take the pot when you win.
For example, this week I played in a $5/$10 game. I was in the middle position and had Queen-Ten. Sure, I could have gone all-in with Queen-Club or even Ten-Queen, but with just a single chip difference I could have been the chip leader. Instead, I simply waited for a stronger hand and picked up the blinds.
